Walk, Pedal, or Drive . . .
The Open Elgin Architectural Tour invites the public to embark on a self-guided tour of some of Elgin's most diverse and interesting architecture. The tour includes more than 30 buildings that will be open to the to public for one day only from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. - school buildings will be open until 3 p.m.
The Open Elgin Architectural Tour consist of several historically, definitive building and sites to the modernist Geo-Thermal applications used in Award Winning LEED buildings. You'll simply look at Elgin with a whole different perspective!
You can sample all the buildings on our tour by selecting "All Buildings" from the menu. Some highlights of the tour include: School District's U-46 iconic Observatory Planetarium, Advocate Sherman Hospital's Geo-Thermal Lake - used to heat and cool the entire hospital, Elgin Professional Building (Boo - watch out for the ghost!), and the charming, storybook, English Tutor which once was the Elgin Elk's Lodge now home to Demi & Cooper Advertising. Oh, and don't forget to include the Ranstead Building on your tour for a true taste of Elgin. It houses Al's Cafe and Creamery and their malts are beyond Elgin famous!
Attendees can plan their self-guided tour utilizing our Google® Open Elgin Map. Larger maps will be available the day of the event at each building location.

P.S. Volunteers Needed
Be a part of the first Open Elgin! Event volunteers are needed to welcome visitors at some of Elgin’s most historic and significant buildings on April 22. Duties will include greeting guests and sharing information about a building during two- or four-hour shifts. Sign up with a friend and work together. Contact Nancy Haggard at 847-289-5840.
