204 S. State Street, Elgin IL 60123

HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE – 204 S. State Street, more commonly known as the Oak Crest Residence, was built in 1906 as an old people’s home. The property was once owned by the Lord family who donated the land for this use.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE – 204 S. State Street was built at a time where the Prairie School of architecture was becoming more popular due to the rejection of the highly ornate, Victorian past into a more nature-like and modern way of living. The building demonstrates key characteristics of this style including its horizontal emphasis, its large overhanging eaves supported by simple brackets, grouped windows, and its unique semi-circular porch.     Sources: Gifford Park Association
