Where do I start?
You can start with any building you want. You make your own itinerary utilizing our brochure or online map. Be sure to schedule enough time to stop at one of our local restaurants for a bite to eat!
What is the best way to navigate the city during Open Elgin?
Walk, Pedal or Drive. The majority of the sites in the downtown area are within walking distance of one another. There is on-street parking (no time limits on weekends!), public parking lots and some of the buildings have their own parking lots. Public parking is noted on our map.
How can I get involved in OpenElgin?
- Volunteer - Be a part of Open Elgin! Event volunteers are needed to welcome visitors to some of Elgin’s most historic and significant buildings. Duties will include greeting guests and sharing information about a building during two or four hour shifts. Contact Nancy Haggard at 847-289-5840 or
- Send us Your Memories of a Building - The Elgin Area Chamber is currently in what used to the Woolworth's building in downtown Elgin. People come in all the time and tell us about having lunch "at the counter". We love hearing your stories and would like to share them on this site. If you have a memory we could share, please send it to info@OpenElgin.com along with your written permission to publish your story.
- Send us Your Photos - Did you discover a cool hob-knob on the tour, find the sun hitting the stained-glass just right, or perhaps come across a curious object? Snap a photo and send them to us at info@OpenElgin.com along with your permission to use the photo.
What if I can't make it for the tour? The buildings and our map are available all year around. Feel free to use our online map to take a stroll (or a couple of strolls) around Elgin anytime! Unfortunately, many of the buildings are open to the public. Have a question or a comment?
